Thassos has some of the richest soils between the Aegean islands. Fruits, honey, olives, olive oil and wine are some of the most famous products, not only in Greece, that the island has to offer. The big forest fires in the 80s, destroyed the largest part of the pine forests resulting in the extinction of the wolf and the jackal, whose numbers were already zero. Nowadays in Thassos you can find foxes, hares, badgers and few smaller mammals (May 2010: emails-argue recieved, from local people that they say there are no foxes in island ).
If you follow the left road in the crossroad of Prinos and in a distance of 4 klm, you will reach the first Kazaviti, the so called Mikro Kazaviti (Small Prinos). 500 m after that lays Megalo Kazaviti (Big Prinos). They are definitely the most traditional little villages built in a hills’ slope, inside a dale. Unfortunately, today a lot of houses have been abandoned by the local people who left for finding jobs and better life in the lowlands of the island or ever further away.
Heading west from Limenas we pass by some of the most beautiful coasts of Thassos like the beaches of Agios Vasilios, with sycamores, thin sand and the small chapel of St. Vasilios build next to the sea, Nysteri, Glyfada, Papalimani, and Pachi, with pine trees that almost touch the waves of the sea, reaching in the end Skala Rachoni, which is the small port of Rachoni and Agios Georgios (Vouz), located about 5 klm away towards the interior of the island.
The small town of Thassos (or Limenas, as it is called by the Thassians) is build in the recess of a gulf, between capes Evreokastro to the east and Pachi to the west.
Panagia is a classic village with a rich history and, unfortunately, many unknown aspects. It is one of the richest and most important villages in the island. It was built around 300 years ago, yet in the Byzantine era there was a settlement here called “Anastasion”.
Potamia is one of the most known small villages of the island. Build on the foothills of the tallest mountain of Thassos, it offers a spectacular verdurous scenery with intense vegetation. The lovers of hitchhiking will find in this village an ideal path, literally stuffed in green, leading up to the mountain and to the conquest of it’s tallest peek, Ypsario.
Kinira village is one of the most beautiful islands of Eastern Thasos. Its name is well known from the ancient years. The wider region is full of ancient findings of the archaic and Roman period. Due to many springs that are spread all over the near slops the Vegetation is very dense.
The traditional settlement rouses from the lethargy for few days only celebrating the memory of St. Athanassios. The messages of protection and ecotourist development haven't arrived here yet...
